Slippers for Foot Corns

Your feet take plenty of strain on a daily basis without you even knowing it. Whether you’re running, walking, or standing for long periods of time, your poor feet are always working hard to keep you going.

In turn, your feet may actually develop conditions such as color, callouses, and other deformities or issues. If left untreated, some of these things can lead to more serious problems in the future. However, if you choose to treat them early on, they will not become such a big deal.

In this article, we look more carefully into the condition called corns which develops from continuous strain and pressure on a particular area of the foot. Corns are common in older people because their feet have been under pressure for most of their lives. They can also develop when wearing shoes that don’t fit well or otherwise rub against your skin. We will discuss the best slippers for corns to reduce strain and provide some relief.

Corns VS Calluses

Corns and calluses are two of the most common foot problems that we see in our office. But firstly, let us try and understand better what corns essentially are and how they compare to callouses;

Callouses, as well as corns, are thick skin on areas of the foot that are caused by constant friction and pressure. This can lead to pain and discomfort when you walk or wear shoes.

Calluses can form on your hands and feet and usually do not require much treatment as they are basically just layers of hardened skin. At the same time, Corns have a soft or hard inner core. Corns usually form between the toes or on the tops of the toes and sides of the feet.

Causes

A callus is a hard, thick skin that looks like it has no feeling. A corn is a hard center surrounded by inflamed skin that looks painful. Both are caused by friction or pressure on the skin. Corns and calluses occur mostly on the hands and feet and can cause pain when left untreated. Corns or calluses can be treated at home in most cases, but if you have diabetes or poor circulation, don’t attempt self-treatment without talking to your doctor first.

Calluses can appear anywhere on the body, including the hands and feet; however, they are most commonly found on the soles of the feet. Calluses form because the skin is trying to protect itself from injury. The more friction and pressure applied to the area, the thicker the skin becomes in order to protect itself. Calluses are typically not painful unless there is an open sore present due to excessive friction or rubbing of the area.

Symptoms

Do you have dry, thickened skin on your feet? If so, is it a callus or a corn? It may not seem like there’s much difference between the two, but they are actually very different. Knowing which one you have will help you take care of it and prevent it from getting worse. Here’s how to tell the difference between the two.

A Callus is a hard and dry, thick, greyish, or yellow piece of skin that is not so sensitive to touch. At the same time, a Corn looks more like an open sore with a ring in the middle. The ring inside the corn is just a dead skin cell that has been trapped inside. You may feel pain when pressure is applied to the area around your corn because usually corns are located in parts of your feet where there is the pressure when walking or running.

Prevention

The best way to prevent corn and Calluses is to wear properly fitted footwear that supports your feet. Wearing shoes that are too tight or too short can cause a lot of friction on your feet as well as putting too much weight on the front part of your feet, causing pressure on the areas where corn and Calluses appear. This is why people who have bunions and hammertoes will typically have calluses on the bottom of their feet where the bunion or hammertoe puts extra pressure when they walk. Another way to prevent Corns and Calluses is to avoid wearing high heels that put extra pressure on the ball of the foot. When you wear heels, it puts extra weight on your toes as well as causes friction in places where your toes do not fit properly into your shoes. This can cause corns between your toes, overlying corns on the top of your toes, or calluses under or near your toes. Wearing open-toed shoes or sandals can also expose areas of your skin to direct sunlight and dryness, causing thickening of the skin which may become a callus.

Choosing Slippers for Corns

When it comes to finding the right footwear, we all know there’s a big difference between a pair of shoes that just fits and a pair that is truly comfortable. Our feet are vulnerable to a lot of abuse, especially if we don’t give them the support they need when they’re on the go. By investing in a pair of shoes with good cushioning and support, you can ensure that your feet are getting the best care possible—and make sure you’re making strides to prevent conditions like calluses and corns.

The most common causes of these painful skin conditions are friction, pressure, or repeated impact on an area of your foot. To avoid these problems, you can apply cushions or pads to protect your feet from rubbing against your shoes or any other surface, but there are also some simple changes you can make to your footwear. Just as you would choose proper athletic or work shoes, you also need to choose the right slippers to prevent corn.

From experience, I can say that most slippers offer very little comfort and support features and sometimes an uncomfortable fit that can cause friction and pressure, leading to corns and calluses. You will need to make sure there are no hard ridges, lumps, or areas of the slippers.

Features of a Good Slipper for Foot Corns

The best slippers for foot corns are made with features that allow your feet to be comfortable and can even help relieve pain and improve healing.

A good slipper has uppers that are comfortable and supportive, plus a soft cushioned footbed, and a durable outsole.

The uppers of slippers are often very flexible and easy to move in, unlike the stiff materials you might find in hiking boots. Slippers come in a variety of materials such as leather, textile, memory foam and others.

When it comes to the footbed, you need something that is padded or cushioned so that your feet have a soft landing. A soft lining will also prevent friction against your skin. You can opt for thick memory foam or EVA midsoles to keep your feet from pounding on a hard surface.

Good arch support will also help relieve some of the pressure on your feet. You need roomy toe boxes so that there’s no friction on the corns or calluses. You can even choose wider-width for a more relaxed fit.

You will find slippers with rubber outsoles which are ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, while indoor-only slippers might have softer EVA or leather soles which are also more lightweight.
